"One of the best experiences of our lives"

My first African safari and after going here I wouldn't want to do a safari anywhere else. A truly memorable life moment and more than I could ever have hoped for. The lodge we stayed at was above five star and the food was great. The setup of the whole reserve is excellent and provides for an amazing experience. Our rangers Matt and Kerry were brilliant and so knowledgeable, their humour and laid back approach made the safari even more enjoyable. I must return here again as once is not enough. Thanks guys!

Wow! And yes, I'm not easily wowed if you've read any of my other reviews. This is a gorgeous place, a special location with interesting ecosystems, and fantastic service. The rooms are little houses, totally separate from each other out in the bush, beautifully decorated and appointed, kind of a Japanese zen style, no detail has been missed. The game drives were amazing. We learned so much about the bush and the animals. The food was definitely 5 star. Highly recommend this experience, every employee was sweet and lovely...

"Really wonderful!”

Mini bar

Our family (3 generations) stayed at Mountain Lodge for 3 nights. We were all so well looked after - especially our kids who enjoyed their morning activities with Steph and their afternoon game viewing with the adults. The accommodation is lovely and the game viewing was great, as always in Phinda. Breakfast and lunch spectacular. Dinner didn't stand out as much but dinner in the bush was a fantastic experience. It's a busy camp with many guests relative to the other camps we've been to with andBeyond, but so worthwhile to be able to take our kids and expose them to this special experience and teach them to value nature. They just loved it! Nick was a fantastic ranger who went out of his way to satisfy our family and we've never had as superb a butler as Ayanda (and never needed one as much as this time round with kids!). The staff really stand out at Mountain!

We stayed at Mountain Lodge and Amy was our Ranger and Malusi was our Game Tracker. They were both wonderful and we had fantastic viewings of elephant and cheetah which were the animals our party most wanted to see. Our accommodation was lovely and we only wished we had more time to enjoy it as we only booked one night. That said, definitely worthwhile and we would love to go back. If I was asked for one thing that could be improved it would be to have less spicy food. The idea of providing a set range of food works really well as food arrives very quickly and is beautifully presented but we found that too much of it had chilli and maybe a non-spicy option could be offered. Otherwise really a great experience.

At Phinda Mountain Lodge a room with a view isn’t just an option – it’s an absolute guarantee. Poised majestically on the crest of a mountain, the lodge commands a dramatic vista over the surrounding landscape.

Phinda Mountain Lodge has 16 standard air-conditioned suites, each with a lounge and en-suite bathroom opening onto a viewing deck and private plunge pool.

Family suite and cottages are designed to host 4 guests. They offers same suite features as a standard suite (except plunge pool). Family cottages can be divided into 6 cottages on demand.

PHINDA ROCK LODGE

Our previous 3 visits to Phinda have been to lodges in the north section. Rock Lodge is a first for us. It is also a small intimate experience with just 6 cabins not a hotel experience that is a couple of the other properties here. Each cabin feels isolated and in a wilderness setting. The architecture is reminiscent of Ethiopian thick-walled buildings. The decor is perfectly themed. Food is imaginative and presented in a serving dish style so no food is wasted with too ample servings. Lots of variety and choice. The kitchen is sensitive to announced allergies and make a point of reinforcing that they have prepared the dishes with that in mind. Game Drives. Richard our Ranger understands what photographers need to position the vehicle right for the light. He is also skilled at finding the cats. He is a good story teller and has a knowledge of the history of the different cat families. If you have time go north to the sand forest. It has a great story with unique species and special protection from elephants. Lots of cheetahs and giraffes.

The lodge is one of a collection of satellite lodges all offering different characteristics. This was quiet, intimate with only about six lodges. We were in number three just a few steps from the main house and dining terrace but once inside you would think you were the only people for miles. A big spacious living room leads onto an even bigger bedroom then onto a bathroom then walk in shower. All of which have massive panoramic windows looking out onto phinda rock, even the toilet. We had a sun bed terrace and plunge pool too, which the birds, and squirrels enjoyed drinking from. All the meals were amazing. Simple well cooked wholesome meals that tasted amazing. Two drives a day early morning  The staff were amazing! Top team! We practically saw the big five in a day and a half, apparently unheard of. We saw so many black rhino it became a bit embarrassing. Highlight, sitting among a pride of lions watching the cubs play and a lioness walk pass me so close I could touch her and all the while she fixed me with her stare. So impressive. A close second was a cheetah and cub with a fresh kill. You make such good friends here and it is hard to say goodbye. We will be back.

Phinda Rock Lodge is dramatically set into a cliff face overlooking breathtaking Leopard Rock. Lodge is an architectural admiration, that combines Malian motives with pueblo panache.

Six luxury suites are seemingly suspended over the deep valley below, providing spectacular views. Each luxury suite, constructed from contoured stone and adobe, has a large bedroom and en-suite bathroom with a bath tub and outdoor showers, private plunge pool and dedicated viewing deck. This is an intimate and romantic lodge where guests are treated like close family members.

Leopard Rock lies directly across from the lodge. Watering hole draws wildlife from the broad valley below and you can watch the various game come to drink and chill out at all hours of the day and night.

“&BEYOND our 'wildest dreams'!”

FROM $708 (R9,230) PER PERSON SHARING

This lodge was simply magical! We loved the fact that they only had six villas which were very private. I felt the lodge was very conscientious about water and resources considering they were in the middle of no where! They did have enormous bath tubs but that didn't necessary mean you needed to use them considering they have been in a considerable drought season for several years. They did not change our linens or towels every day nor did they need to. The staff were simply amazing, such lovely, kind, and happy souls who truly seemed to love what they did! Magic ensured we never left the table without a full belly filled with the most amazing food! Matt Yardley was our guide and Abel was our tracker who were incredibly knowledgeable and lovely in every aspect! We didn't want to leave!!! Really... hoped we would miss our charter flight back to Johannesburg but unfortunately Matt's keen driving got to the runway on time. Boo hoo... The animal viewing was some of the best on our entire trip and would highly recommend a trip to Phinda to see some of South Africa's most incredible wildlife! Trust me when I say....you have to do this at least once in your life time!!!!

When you leave a place in near tears,(in a good way) after only spending three nights there, then it is a special place for sure. Having stayed at an &BEYOND property in India last year, we were expecting the best. Carla Glasspool, helped us with an exciting itinerary & Phinda Vlei was chosen as our first safari stop. The place is stunning, the suites are stunning, the food is stunning & the people who look after you are amazing. Natasha is the 'Queen' of front of house & works tirelessly with her team, to ensure you want for nothing & 'Magic' the chef, is called magic for a reason! Our game drives were the best we have encounted on any safari, with the legendary Dumi, our Ranger, ably supported by Zak our tracker, finding us the best game viewings possible. Rhino with baby, cheetah with three small cubs, a pride of 6 lionesses were the highlights of three days at Phinda. It really doesn't get better than this! We are not super rich people & sacrifices were made to experience this place & it was worth every penny. I will treasure this time forever and will do anything to return one day.

“Amazing Experience!”

I had the most amazing two days at the Zuka lodge! Everyone was dedicated to making sure I had a fantastic experience. I had my own private "room", complete with a huge bath, nice sitting area, comfortable bed and outside deck. The staff was so attentive without being intrusive. It was all about what I wanted to do. One day I asked for a light lunch of cheese, crackers and wine at my suite and it was perfect! The game drives were outstanding! I went out each morning and afternoon and we saw so many animals. Zebras, lions, elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, babboons, buffalo, hippos, antelope, hyena, and even a crocodile! I got to the point that I could recognize tracks of different animals. There was no roughing it, this is a very classy place, and one afternoon they even set up a whole bar for drinks in the middle of a drive.  One thing that such a special touch was when our tracker brought me a big hot water bottle for me to put behind me, since I forgot to bring a warm jacket...their seasons are opposite ours...lala!I would totally go back in a heartbeat. With just 4 suites at this lodge, it would be perfect for a nice family experience.

Holy cow! What an experience! We were so lucky...we were the only people staying at the lodge so we had it...and the staff...all to ourselves! The cabins (we had two, one for us, one for our daughter) were lovely. Spacious, comfortable beds, large bathroom with big shower and claw foot tub. There was also an outdoor shower but we didn't take advantage of that :-) There was a watering hole directly in front of our cabins and it was so cool to watch the animals come for a drink. The food was delicious thanks to our *personal* chef, Grateful. Other staff members, Zane (pronounced Zah-nay) and Professor, were wonderful. So friendly and accommodating! Our game driver, Matt, was awesome. His tracker partner, Bosani, was awesome as well. They found us an amazing variety of animals for viewing...nyala, warthog, baboon, the elusive leopard, lion, giraffe, cheetah (and cubs), kudo, wildebeest, impala, lion (more cubs), zebra, vervet monkey and a number of birds. We just loved our stay at Zuka and would return in a heartbeat

Phinda Zuka Lodge has 4 thatched luxurious bush cottages in Zulu style. Set 15 meters apart from each other, the cottages offer a lot of privacy, peace and serenity. Each cottage boasts a private veranda overlooking a busy waterhole. The rooms are designed for comfort and relaxed living and feature air-conditioning, overhead fans and en suite bathrooms - complete with a circular bath chamber, double shower and twin hand basins - over the wetlands.

WILDLIFE

Having reintroduced cheetah to the area after an absence of over fifty years, &Beyond Phinda has quickly established a reputation as one of the best places to view and photograph these rare cats. With much of Phinda dominated by a mosaic of various savanna habitats, these speedy carnivores have plenty of space to carry out their explosive hunting technique, as well as enough cover to protect and shelter their cubs.

Along with cheetah, lion and leopard are tracked on the reserve on a daily basis and guests have a high likelihood of encountering these magnificent animals. Another success story at &Beyond Phinda is that of both the white and the more endangered black rhino. Brought back from the brink of extinction, both the grass eating white rhino and the shrub grazing black rhino are doing well at the reserve.
